Iowa Reading Corps

In partnership with local United Ways and school districts across the state, the Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps

program launched in the fall of 2013.

Research shows that after third grade, students start reading to learn rather than learning to read. As a local United Way network

in Iowa, we are working together to partner with schools and maximize opportunities for communities to access evidence-based

reading initiatives that will support the tremendous work of educators in our state.

Oskaloosa Elementary School (OES) was awarded two Iowa Reading Corps (IRC) members for the 2015-2016 school year.

Each IRC member is trained as an Elementary Literacy Tutor and paid through a United Way of Mahaska County grant. IRC

members provide OES third graders who are struggling with reading with 1-on-1 tutoring every day. The 20-minute tutoring sessions focus on building students' skills in phonics, phonemic awareness and fluency.

The help students recieve through the IRC program sets them up to be successful for the rest of their education and future careers. Each year, IRC members see real results that have made lasting impacts in students' lives. Funds from this year's LIVE UNITED 5K will go towards a grant to pay for IRC members in the 2016-2017 school year at OES.
